Y-Strainers are devices for mechanically removing solids from flowing liquids by way of a perforated straining element. They are used in pipelines to protect equipment such as pumps, meters, control valves, and regulators.
Y-strainers have the advantage of being installed in either a horizontal or vertical position. In both cases, the screening element must be on the "down side" of the strainer body so the entrapped material can properly collect in it.
For protection from tank, river, dam or dirty water, subjected to debris and physical waste, connect the "Y" strainer after the ball valve coming off the tank outlet, before the pump.
Check the "Y" strainer for any blockages at least once a month to make sure the water source is always available to the pump when it's running.
