Pond and Dam Aeration

To secret ingredient to keeping water clean and bacteria-free is simply air. Be it a pond, water feature or a large dam, aeration is the key to beautiful water quality.

Our in house irrigation experts can design an aeration system to suit with all the components available at online prices.

The process of aeration is literally adding air, so aeration systems support the health of your pond or dam by increasing the flow of oxygen in the water.  Aeration will reduce the build up of toxic sludge at the bottom of your pond/dam.  By making use of an aeration system you also create a constant circulation between all levels and layers of your water, discouraging algae and mosquitos from making your dam/pond their home, increasing beneficial bacteria in your water to thrive and perform at its best.

Aeration can cause a shift in the carbon dioxide levels within the pond and, in turn, can shift the pH levels causing conditions that are more favorable for plants, and undesirable for algae and bacteria. This constant release of unwanted gases and reintroduction of oxygen will create a healthier pond without the risk of killing fish.

Technically, too much oxygen can be a problem for your fish, but this is very unlikely in a situation of aerating your pond.  A condition known as gas bubble disease (when gases develop in the fishes bloodstream) can be lethal, and can be caused by too much oxygen in your pond or dam. This is a much more common problem with high levels of nitrogen though. As long as you are using specially designed aeration equipment, you almost certainly won’t have too much oxygen in your pond or dam.

Many brands have designed kits, special pumps, and other high end ways of aerating the water in your pond or dam. Over time, we have come to find the easiest, cost effective way of aerating your water is by installing a waterfeature.

Depending on the size of your pond or dam, this method effectively ensures the constant cycle and movement of the water in your pond to decrease the build up of scale and grime at the bottom. Depending on the nature of the pond or dam (i.e. other external environmental effects), you may require other extra methods for proper aeration. Talk to one of our specialists if you're not sure.

Water aeration is the process of increasing the oxygen saturation levels in your water. Aeration brings water and air in close contact by exposing drops or thin sheets of water to the air or by introducing small bubbles of air (the smaller the bubble, the better) and letting them rise through the water. The scrubbing process caused by the turbulence of aeration physically removes dissolved gases from the water and allows them to escape into the surrounding air.

Aeration can protect your pond and your fish during an algae bloom. Adding an aeration device will provide added oxygen to the water and help buffer the effect of an algae die off. When the algae die and are being decomposed by bacteria, the added oxygen allows the decomposition process to occur more quickly with fewer harmful by-products.  Algae blooms typically occur in the hot, calm, sunny times of the year. The agitation at the surface that eliminates the stagnant areas decreases the areas algae have available to them to thrive. Just simple movement of the water will help limit the amount of algae present in the pond. Algae do not like moving water or surface agitation and prefer the still, stagnant areas to thrive.

Dam Aeration Systems support the health of your aquatic ecosystem by adding oxygen to your water and mixing that oxygen throughout the entire dam. Using a dam aerator prevents stratification by mixing oxygen throughout all layers of your water. Stratification is a process in which your dam water separates into layers with different temperatures and oxygen levels within each layer. It is also the main reason why you’ll experience the build up of toxic sludge at the bottom of your dam. This is because all the organic matter decomposing down there requires a fair bit of oxygen to be effectively dealt with. If not dealt with properly, this sludge will release a mass of nutrient, and in some cases toxins, into your dam water. This leads to odours, fish kills, algal blooms and aquatic weed growth so the inclusion of a dam aerator can be seen as a preventative measure when it comes to dam health.

How does aeration improve water quality?

The process of aeration is literally adding air, so aeration systems support the health of your pond or dam by increasing the flow of oxygen in the water.  Aeration will reduce the build up of toxic sludge at the bottom of your pond/dam.  By making use of an aeration system you also create a constant circulation between all levels and layers of your water, discouraging algae and mosquitos from making your dam/pond their home, increasing beneficial bacteria in your water to thrive and perform at its best.

Can aeration help with PH levels?

Aeration can cause a shift in the carbon dioxide levels within the pond and, in turn, can shift the pH levels causing conditions that are more favorable for plants, and undesirable for algae and bacteria. This constant release of unwanted gases and reintroduction of oxygen will create a healthier pond without the risk of killing fish.

Is too much aeration bad for fish?

Technically, too much oxygen can be a problem for your fish, but this is very unlikely in a situation of aerating your pond.  A condition known as gas bubble disease (when gases develop in the fishes bloodstream) can be lethal, and can be caused by too much oxygen in your pond or dam.
